A picture of me at graduation taken by the Leaf Chronicle

A few houses away from me, a go-cart sitting in direct sunlight decided its days were through and took the house down with it. After the gas tank exploded this entire hand-built log cabin went ablaze. My dearest Jacob was among the first to see the flames and rushed to the scene. He called me, which I found odd considering he was just next door at his aunts, and told me what was happening and that he loved me. He hung up and proceeded to kick in the back door and break a few windows to open a pathway for escape and looked for any sign of life. By this time the house was completely engulfed in flames and I was on the phone with 911 operators and standing in the yard of the burning home. He risked his very life to assure the safety of anyone inside that home. A neighbor yelled to him that no one was home, the residents were on vacation. Even still he stuck around because he knew that two small dogs lived in that house. When EMT’s arrived and the flames were being evaluated, someone phoned the owners of the home to learn that they were on their way back from vacation and their dogs were with them. Though no one was in the home, Jacob, your efforts of kindness were not overlooked or disregarded. My heart reaches out to the family of five, three of which are children still in elementary school. Summer isn’t going to be fun for the children and I feel sorry for that. Our community has agreed to push these wonderful people back onto their feet and be here for them in their time of loss. Though no lives were claimed, one volunteer fireman was taken away in an ambulance after taking in too much smoke trying to put out the blaze. My best wishes also go out to him. The picture does no justice to the horrifying scene photographed here, it was such a lovely home and I look forward to seeing it rebuilt for the family. To the woman of the house, my sympathy goes out to you, your screams of terror and tears will echo in my mind for years to come, I am so sorry for what you have lost and I hope to see it all returned to you.

One day, I will own one of these.

One day, I will own one of these.

and now it is that beautiful time of day in which I fill my lungs with the cancerous smoke of cigarettes.

I found this picture on my computer and felt the need to blog it for a thousandth time. This was the last time I ever got to see Jacob. Good friends are hard to find and even harder to lose, especially when it’s for good. You gave me some of my greatest memories. Rest in peace.
